From Hawaiʻi Island’s Akaka Falls and Kauai’s Weeping Wall to Maui’s Waimoku and Makahiku Falls, the Hawaiʻian Islands are home to some of the world’s most impressive waterfalls. While we absolutely adore the islands’ stream-fed waterfalls that are always flowing, the extensive rain Hawaiʻi that Hawaiʻian tends to receive seasonally brings many other intermittent waterfalls to our attention. Some of these 9 waterfalls flow year-round, but are only truly impressive when it’s raining. While others, like the waterfall walls found on three of the major Hawaiʻian Islands, are only visible when it’s raining. We love these Hawaiʻian waterfalls near me that are even more impressive right after a good storm!
1. Hi’ilawe Falls
With a main drop of more than 1,200 feet, Hi’ilawe Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaiʻi. Cascading into Waipio Valley, the waterfall flows only after a period of heavy rain, and is accessible via hike or horseback ride. If you’re looking for Hawaiʻian waterfalls near me, there’s not many that are more impressive than the famouS Hi’ilawe Falls.
2. Ko’olau Mountains Waterfalls
While these falls may not be overly documented, and only appear when it is raining heavily, it’s quite the pleasant surprise to see these gorgeous falls on your drive across Oahu’s already stunning H-3. This waterfall hike in Oahu is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. But it is on private property, so make sure to book your guide ahead of time!
3. Makapipi Falls
Makapipi Falls is visible from the Road to Hana, and is unique in that the waterfall plummets into a striking blue pool. Unfortunately, the strength of the falls is often dependent on rainfall – so it’s the perfect time to go! We love that you can pull over to easily see this waterfall on Maui, especially during a good rainstorm.
4. Kauai’s Weeping Wall
Averaging more than 450 inches of rain each year, Mount Waialeale is one of the wettest spots on earth. As rainwater makes its way down the 5,148 foot summit, innumerable streams are formed, creating a stunning landscape. Frequently cited as holding the title of “most majestic waterfall on Kauai,” this waterfall is the stuff dreams are made of. the entire mountain is literally inundated with beautiful waterfalls.
5. Likeke Falls
Located off of Oahu’s Old Pali Road is an impressive waterfall in the heart of the Ko’olau Mountains. While it is usually flowing, it’s better when it rains. We love this kid-friendly hike in Oahu, and the pools are fun to swim in, especially after a good rain.
6. Oloupena Falls
This beauty located on Molokai’s northern coast measures in at approximately 2,953 feet tall, and is considered to be the fourth tallest waterfall in the entire world. The seasonal waterfall is only visible from the ocean, or the air. Oloupena Falls in Molokai is best seen after a good rainfall, and falls straight into the ocean. Take a helicopter ride high above the water to get the best view of this famous waterfall.
7. Manoa Falls
Just miles away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu is the lush Manoa Valley, and in it, the gorgeous Manoa Falls. This 150-foot tall waterfall is accessible after a short 1.6-mile round trip hike. While the waterfall flows almost all the time, it is an incredible sight to behold after it’s rained. We think this is one of the best waterfall hikes in Oahu, as it’s easy enough for the whole family to joyfully complete.
8. Maui’s Wall Of Tears
As many as 17 waterfalls cascade down this lush cliff face during periods of heavy rain. How amazing is that? This lesser known waterfall in Maui is hidden in the West Maui Mountains. Because they’re so deep into the mountain range, they’re best seen on a local helicopter ride. And well worth the flight!
9. Wailua Falls
Though the height of this Kauai waterfall is largely disputed, there’s no arguing that it is simply stunning after a good rainstorm. Just off the beaten path, it’s a great waterfall to see if you’re looking for waterfalls near me in Kauai.
